Logistics
BASF
Logistics facilitates the seamless and cost effective movement of products and
information throughout the Supply Chain, and provides the means to continuously
improve our competitive position, thus creating value for BASF and our business
partners. BASF
evaluates its supply chain globally. Planning the integration of raw material
supply, production, distribution, inventory, transportation, and information requirements
is the key to successful optimization. Implementing process and systematic improvements
or coordinating cross-functional operations to maximize supply chain efficiency
is a constant challenge. The North American region is one part of BASF’s
Global Logistics Community, which is structured to support both individual businesses,
as well as, to capitalize on synergies within the global supply chain. BASF Corporation
is in fact, one of the top 125 importers in the US. To
accomplish our goals, Logistics constantly reevaluates our business strategies.
Logistics processes and operating practices must be flexible enough to respond
to changing markets and business conditions. Logistics functions incorporate a
mixture of owned /leased assets, self -managed processes or systems, as well as,
procured third party services.
BASF spends
a considerable amount on logistics-related costs annually. Numerous
modes of transportation were employed to move our product: Bulk
Truck, package truckload/less-than-truckload, Inter-modal, Rail,
Marine, and Air.
The
logistics organization uses the Balanced Scorecard approach to manage and measure
performance. Key Performance Indicator (KPI) categories include: customer, financial,
internal, and innovative/developmental measurements. The KPI ‘s enable an objective
evaluation of logistics functional performance in relation to our targeted goals.
