Manufacturing
Technological
evolution, increased competitiveness, and globalization
are all driving change at a continually accelerating
pace. BASF is at the forefront of this - not only
in adapting to change, but maximizing the benefits
it can bring. Our manufacturing personnel throughout
BASF anticipate change and develop strategies that
help us take advantage of it.
At
BASF, we focus on the optimal utilization of resources
to gain competitive advantage. BASF has long been
recognized for making the most of its integrated approach
to manufacturing, research, and overall management
philosophy. This philosophy, together with the maximum
integration of infrastructure, processes, energy and
waste management, is known as Verbund, a German word
meaning "linked" or "integrated" to the maximum
degree.
A
practical demonstration of Verbund can be seen at
one of our major sites in Port Arthur, Texas. Together
with our partner ATOFINA, we are building the
world's largest steam cracker in Port Arthur, Texas.
Located next to ATOFINA's existing oil refinery,
the cracker is being integrated with the refinery
to improve efficiency and lower costs.
Across
the BASF organization, our staff is encouraged to
identify how we can improve all aspects of our businesses.
This includes increasing production levels, reducing
cycle times, and improving product quality and customer
service.
Our
manufacturing sites are integrated and growing due to capital
investments and acquisitions. The manufacturing community will
have capital investments approaching a billion dollars each year.
Our investments in equipment and people are clear examples of
how BASF is creating and embracing change in an ever-evolving
economy.
