| BASF donates $2,000 to Will County Emergency
Management Agency
Grant to be used for purchase of chemical, radiological monitoring
equipment
JOLIET, Ill., September 24, 2004 -- BASF today presented the Will
County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) with a $2,000 “Helping
Make Communities Better” grant that the agency will use to
purchase additional chemical and radiological monitoring equipment
for use in hazardous materials incidents.
Such equipment takes on added importance to the agency’s
efforts in the current climate of heightened national security,
according to Harold Damron, Chief Deputy Director, Will County EMA.
“Where we used to think of a bomb threat in terms of ‘conventional
explosives,’ we now have to consider the possibility of a
‘dirty bomb’ that includes radiological materials,”
Damron said. “After the anthrax attacks, we also had a number
of ‘suspicious powder’ type incidents that we had to
respond to, and it just stretched our resources to the limit. The
new equipment will greatly assist our efforts.”
"We're proud to support the vital work of the Will County
EMA," said Gerry Sabo, Manager, Site Services at BASF's Joliet
site. "BASF is known as the company that helps make products
better. We also have a strong commitment to helping make the communities
in which we work and live better."
The Will County EMA is responsible for coordinating the emergency
and disaster mitigation, as well as preparedness, planning, response
and recovery efforts of Will County and its political subdivisions
in conjunction with the state of Illinois, private organizations,
businesses and the public. The agency provides a wide array of programs,
including development of emergency plans, conduct of disaster exercises,
development of emergency communications and warning systems, operations
of specialized emergency response units, public awareness and education,
and guidance to local units of government.
Approximately 115 employees work at BASF's Joliet site, which makes
polystyrene used in insulation and packaging materials, appliance
parts, housewares, cosmetic containers, and electronic equipment
casings.
