| BASF chemists provide ‘hands-on’
learning experiences at science event
Experiments and demonstrations kick off National Chemistry Week
program
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., October 19, 2004 -- A group of chemists
from BASF, the company known for ‘helping make products better,’
made the complex world of chemistry seem much simpler at a science
event held at the Cranbrook Institute of Science this past Sunday
to mark the start of National Chemistry Week.
An outreach program of the American Chemical Society (ACS), National
Chemistry Week aims to enhance the public's awareness of the contributions
of chemistry to everyday life. Nearly 400 visitors, including many
local students, attended the four-hour program. During their presentations,
chemists from BASF’s Southfield and Wyandotte sites provided
"hands-on" experiments and scientific demonstrations designed
to support the National Chemistry Week theme of “Health and
Wellness.”
Several of the experiments dealt with the human body, including
one in which students used urine testing strips to look for protein
and glucose in solutions.
“The benefits of modern chemistry are all around us,”
said Denise Grimsley, a Senior Researcher from BASF's Wyandotte
site who serves as the National Chemistry Week coordinator for the
Detroit section of the ACS. “This program allowed us to offer
some personal insights into various aspects of the world of chemistry,
and to do so in a creative and informative way.”
Approximately 900 people are employed at BASF's Wyandotte site,
which produces a variety of urethane and specialty plastics products
for the automotive, industrial, and electronic industries. About
400 employees work at the Southfield site, which is the main location
for BASF's automotive coatings research and development in North
America.
