BASF FINA Petrochemicals receives community service award from MODEL
Company recognized for its service to Port Arthur, Jefferson County

PORT ARTHUR, Texas, October 19, 2004 -- MODEL (Mentors Outlining Definitives for Earthly Living), Texas’ longest-serving minority community housing development organization, recently presented BASF FINA Petrochemicals LP with one of its annual awards for outstanding service to the local community.

MODEL’s Arthur Stilwell-Kansas City Southern Corporate Community Service Award was presented to Mark Viator, Community Affairs Manager for BASF FINA Petrochemicals LP, at the organization’s Founder’s Day banquet held at the Robert A. Bob Bower’s Civic Center in Port Arthur on October 14.

“BASF FINA Petrochemicals is committed to helping improve the quality of life for the citizens of our community,” Viator said. “This is a goal we share with MODEL and we are proud to be recognized with this prestigious award from an organization that has done so much for the community.”

MODEL works to improve housing and environmental quality through education workshops and other activities.

Charles X. White, Chief Executive Officer of MODEL, said his organization selected BASF FINA Petrochemicals to receive the award for its extensive record of community service, especially in education.

“For these awards, we chose the companies that have done the most for the community,” said White. “With BASF FINA, we see that first hand. BASF FINA’s commitment to the community speaks for itself – loud and clear.”

Within the past year, BASF FINA Petrochemicals has supported numerous community organizations including the Young Men’s Business League, the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program, LifeShare Blood Centers, the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” Program, the Port Arthur Public School Foundation, the Humane Society of Southeast Texas and the West Orange-Stark High School Vocational Education Program. Last October, BASF FINA Petrochemicals created the "Celebrate Success," program, which rewards the achievements of thousands of Jefferson County students with free tickets to events at Ford Arena.

BASF FINA Petrochemicals LP is a joint venture between BASF Corporation and TOTAL Petrochemicals USA, Inc. The Port Arthur facility operates the largest steam cracker of its type in the world, turning naphtha and light hydrocarbons into ethylene, propylene, and other chemical raw materials. The products from the cracker are in turn used in the manufacturing of hundreds of consumer products. The $1 billion facility began operations in 2001. More than 200 workers are employed at the site.
