| BASF donation supports ‘wetlands’
project at Pacolet Elementary School
Corporate grant highlights National Chemistry Week activities
SPARTANBURG, S.C., October 22, 2004 -- Students at the Pacolet Elementary
School will soon begin exploring the subject of “disappearing
wetlands” through a project made possible, in part, through
a $1,000 "Helping Make Communities Better" grant by BASF.
The company made the donation as part of its community outreach
activities during National Chemistry Week, an annual program of
the American Chemical Society that aims to enhance the public’s
awareness of the contributions of chemistry to our everyday lives.
“The students will explore how the wetlands were formed, what
species depend on them for survival, why these wetlands are disappearing,
and what is being done to restore them,” said school principal
Martha Thomason. “They will also collect data in local watersheds
to compare with student data collected around the world.”
“As part of our National Chemistry Week activities, we are
proud to sponsor this program for the students at Pacolet Elementary
School," said Clarence Batts, Site Manager of BASF's White
Stone site. “As the company known for ‘helping make
products better,’ we appreciate having opportunities to partner
with local schools to help teachers make science education better.”
Approximately 75 employees work at BASF's White Stone site, which
produces surfactants used primarily in consumer and industrial cleaning
products and detergents.
