BASF grant supports Center Area Middle School science education
Donation will support purchase of ‘deluxe science resource program’

MONACA, Pa., October 29, 2004 -- BASF today presented Center Area Middle School with a $1,000 “Helping Make Communities Better” grant that will be used to purchase a popular science resource program for science classrooms.

The program, “Vernier’s LabPro Middle School Deluxe Science Package,” will allow students to collect their own data, upload it to a computer, and analyze their results. Sixth graders will do environmental and water quality testing with a pH sensor and conductivity probe. Seventh grade students will obtain actual heart rates with an exercise heart rate monitor, while eighth graders will use a motion detector to calculate distances, velocity and acceleration.

“We are appreciative of the support BASF has provided our students over the years,” said Michael McCullough, principal of Center Area Middle School. “Their generous contributions have helped extend our science curriculum to include ‘hands-on’ diagnostic tools to explore life and physical sciences.”

The grant continues BASF's company-wide commitment to science education. “BASF is known as the company that helps make products better and we also have a commitment to helping make the communities in which we do business better,” said Jim Mason, Manager of BASF's Monaca site. "Learning about the wonders of science can serve as a great inspiration for these students, who may go on to be chemists, researchers, or engineers. We're proud to support CenterArea Middle School’s science program.”

About 100 people work at BASF's Monaca site, which produces latex used in paper coatings, adhesives, paints and carpet backing.
