| Styropor® EPS foams earn GREENGUARD™
Certification
BASF’s building insulation material assures indoor air quality
FLORHAM PARK, N.J., November 10, 2004 -- BASF’s Styropor
expanded polystyrene (EPS) foams have been certified by the GREENGUARD
Environmental Institute TM (GEI), Atlanta, Ga., for being low-emitting
materials that promote healthier indoor environments. Styropor EPS
foams are used in structural insulation panels (SIPs), insulated
concrete forms and other insulation applications.
The GREENGUARD Certification Program™ is an independent,
third-party testing program that provides a scientifically-based
qualification for low emitting materials, furnishings and processes
that help manufacturers create better and safer indoor environments.
It is the leading independent testing program in North America for
low-emitting products.
“Achievement of the rigorous GREENGUARD Certification recognizes
BASF’s commitment to offering material solutions that bring
environmental and health benefits to homes and commercial buildings
and their occupants,” said Gene Zimmermann, Director of BASF’s
Styropor EPS business in North America.
According to GEI, manufacturers who participate in the GREENGUARD
Certification Program demonstrate their strong commitment to indoor
air and product quality. Tests are performed annually on certified
products to ensure their continuous compliance with GREENGUARD Standards,
and product components are monitored on a quarterly basis and re-certified
every year. The certification process is based on criteria used
by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as standards
set by the state of Washington’s Indoor Air Quality Program
and Germany’s Blue Angel Program.
Zimmermann added that last year, MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design
Chemistry), Charlottesville, Va., the leaders in assessing and optimizing
products and processes for environmental sustainability, announced
that Styropor EPS resins have strong attributes of environmental
sustainability because they can be used and recycled in sustainable
thermal insulation applications.
About the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute
The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute is an independent, non-profit
organization that oversees the GREENGUARD certification program,
including the establishment of acceptable standards for indoor products
and testing protocols. The Institute’s goal is to improve
public health and quality of life by helping manufacturers build
better and safer products. The GREENGUARD Certification Program
is the only independent testing program for low-emitting products.
