| BASF Canada donates video series to support
local schools’ science curriculum
Video program to be included at local Blackie Elementary, Highwood
High Schools
BLACKIE, Alberta, November 22, 2004 -- Students at Blackie Elementary
School and Highwood High School will benefit from an expanded science
resource library with the addition of “Science Screen Reports”
and “Science Screen Reports for Kids” videotape series,
thanks to a donation from BASF Canada.
“Science Screen Reports” for secondary schools and
“Science Screen Reports for Kids” for elementary schools
are programs that bring information on the latest developments in
science, technology, the environment, and medicine into classrooms.
The 2004-2005 series includes topics such as “Atoms and Elements,”
“Protecting Earth’s Atmosphere,” and “A
Scientific Look at the Sun.” In addition to the videotapes,
the program contains a teacher’s guide that provides lesson
strategies, background information and suggestions for critical
thought, career possibilities and references for further study.
“The videos are well-produced and provide just the right
amount of information for children this age,” said Tony Hampshire,
Principal at Blackie Elementary School. “We have a great partnership
with BASF and we continue to develop ideas to encourage our students
to be more involved in science.”
Mr. Jeremy Hall, Science Teacher at Highwood High School, said,
“We are privileged to receive this program. These video tapes
have proven to be quite popular with our whole science staff and
the students.”
“Science Screen Reports” and “Science Screen Reports
for Kids” are produced by Allegro Productions with the guidance
from a panel of dedicated educators. After more than 30 years of
production, the series continues to receive the highest accolades,
having won top honours at the National Educational Film Festival,
as well as other awards around the world.
“A strong educational background in science is essential
in today’s high-tech society,” said Kirk Davies, Manager
of BASF’s Blackie site. “This video series will hopefully
engage students in the study of science and spark their interest
in pursuing scientific careers later in life. We’re proud
to make this donation as part of our ongoing commitment to science
literacy and education.”
BASF Canada’s Blackie site produces the main components used
in rigid urethane systems commonly used for insulation purposes
in commercial, industrial, agricultural and residential buildings
and a host of other markets.
