BASF Canada successfully completes Responsible Care® re-verification
Effective management systems meet or exceed Responsible Care codes

TORONTO, Ontario, November 22, 2004 -- BASF Canada has successfully completed a re-verification of its Responsible Care management systems. Having received initial verification in July 1995 and re-verification in July 2001, this is the third time BASF Canada has received positive results from the assessment.

Responsible Care is a Canadian Chemical Producers’ Association (CCPA) initiative designed to promote the implementation of positive environmental, health, and safety measures with an emphasis on community cooperation. The re-verification is a system to ensure that the Responsible Care management processes and ethic are in place and that performance related to environmental protection, health, safety and security has improved and will continue to do so. The team that verified BASF’s performance was composed of peers and community representatives.

This year, the team concluded that BASF Canada has effective management systems in place to meet the Responsible Care codes and determined it is capable of identifying deficiencies through its management systems, processes, and performance indicators. The team also indicated that BASF demonstrates continuous improvement consistent with the expectations of the company’s stakeholders, including neighbours, employees, peers, governments, and private owners.

“We’re proud of this re-verification,” said John Clarke, President of BASF Canada. “Like all of BASF, we take the corporate value of Sustainable Development very seriously. It’s gratifying when the Responsible Care audit team certifies that we are taking the right steps to protect our colleagues, our environment and our communities.”

The key findings of the re-verification can be accessed by visiting www.basf.ca.

All BASF manufacturing sites in Canada were verified and they include, Abbotsford, British Columbia; Blackie, Alberta; Windsor, Cornwall, Toronto and Georgetown in Ontario.

The CCPA manages Responsible Care. All CCPA member companies undergo Responsible Care re-verification every three years to ensure that previously verified management systems in respect to the Responsible Care code of ethics are still in place or improved.
