| Taylor King selects Micro-Springs™
foam for tight seat upholstery products
‘Springless’ technology from BASF offers more flexibility
in product designs
WYANDOTTE, Mich., December 7, 2004 -- Taylor King, a furniture
manufacturer based in Taylorsville, N.C., introduced two applications
for BASF’s Micro-Springs polyurethane foam at the International
Home Furnishings Market: Fall 2004 in High Point, N.C.
Launched earlier this year, BASF’s Micro-Springs polyurethane
foam could make metal springs in furniture a thing of the past.
The technology behind the foam enables the construction of a one-piece,
drop-in unit that consists of millions of tiny polymer “springs”
that deliver the same performance in comfort, feel and durability
as furniture made with conventional eight-way, hand-tie large metal
spring systems. The difference is that Micro-Springs foam technology
could cost as much as 35 percent less than current traditional furniture
support components, which are typically installed by hand. In addition,
tests have shown that people find the material more comfortable.
The Micro-Springs polyurethane foam will replace the support foundation
on all Taylor King tight seat upholstery products in which hand-tied
springs are not applicable. “Many exposed wood accent chairs
and sofas have a limited cavity for coil springs,” said Del
Starnes, President of Taylor King. “Because the Micro-Springs
foam can be made to any size or thickness, it offers us more flexibility
in our product design.”
Taylor King will also use BASF’s Micro-Springs polyurethane
foam as the interior core of all new premium seat cushion options.
“We’ll combine the Micro-Springs and BASF’s Pluralux®
polyurethane foams with a viscoelastic foam that delivers shape
retention performance jacketed by a down blend to create incredible
seating comfort,” said Starnes. “The Micro-Springs technology
brings together supreme comfort and long-lasting durability no other
foam products have previously accomplished for us.”
“Customers like Taylor King are utilizing BASF’s Micro-Springs
polyurethane foam technologies in many exciting, innovative ways
to create new furniture designs and achieve new levels in comfort
and durability,” said Todd Green, Market Development Manager
for BASF’s Polyurethane Flexible Foams unit in North America.
