BASF awards scholarships to Anthony Wayne High School students
Grants continue company’s science education focus

WHITEHOUSE, Ohio, May 4, 2005 -- BASF has awarded $1,000 college scholarships to Anthony Wayne High School seniors Matthew Abbey and Michael Chaka in recognition of their academic excellence in science. Later this year, both students will attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

During the past 13 years, BASF has donated approximately $30,000 to help support college tuition for Anthony Wayne High School students.

To apply for this year’s scholarships, students were required to submit a 500-word essay about hypothetical discoveries and patents. The essays were judged by a group of BASF’s employees. Abbey wrote about a process that helps reduce the cost of the use of steel, while Chaka submitted an essay concerning a new chemical product that can be used for the treatment of blurred vision.

“BASF has a strong commitment to supporting the communities in which we do business and to supporting education as part of our ‘Helping Make Communities Better’ grant program,” said Ken Perry, Technical Director for Automotive Refinish Operations at BASF’s Coatings Technical Support Center in Whitehouse. “We’re pleased to be able to support outstanding students such as Matthew Abbey and Michael Chaka.”

BASF’s Whitehouse facility includes the company’s North American Customer Service Center, Coatings Laboratories, and Application and Training Center. With approximately 140 employees, the site provides a wide range of research and development, technical, and customer support services for BASF business groups.
