| BASF’s Freeport site honored by Texas
Chemical Council
Site recognized for support of local community and Habitat for Humanity
FREEPORT, Texas, June 30, 2005 -- BASF’s Freeport site was
recognized recently by the Texas Chemical Council (TCC) with a 2004
Excellence in Caring for Texas award. BASF received the distinction
at an awards ceremony on June 9 in Galveston, Texas.
This is the second year in a row BASF has received the award in
the Class IV category (500 or more employees).
Other honorees were: BMC Holdings, Nederland, Texas, Class I (1–60
employees); Chevron Phillips’ chemical plant in Port Arthur,
Texas, Class II (61-200 employees); Dupont’s facility in Corpus
Christi, Texas, Honorable Mention in Class II (61-200 employees);
and Huntsman Polymers Corporation in Odessa, Texas, Class III (201-500
employees).
“The award winners are to be commended,” said TCC Outreach
Committee Chairperson Rick Roberts. “The judges, who are from
peer companies and members of community advisory panels from around
the state, have in-depth knowledge of plant operations and the expectations
of local communities. They’ve recognized that these companies
have distinguished performance in these areas.”
BASF was recognized for its work to revitalize a local Freeport
neighborhood. In 2004, the company sponsored a Habitat for Humanity
house that is now home to a family who was in need of more adequate
housing. Building the house involved five months of planning, more
than 60 BASF employee volunteers, and more than 800 other community
volunteers.
“At BASF, we are not only committed to helping make products
better, we are committed to helping make the communities in which
we live and work better,” said Art Colwell, Vice President
and General Manager of BASF’s Freeport site. “We are
proud of the recognition we’ve received from the TCC, and
even more proud that our work with Habitat for Humanity has given
a local family a new home.”
During the same awards reception, BASF was also given a Distinguished
Service Award for the company’s safety performance in 2004
and involvement with the TCC Occupational Safety Committee.
The objective of both awards programs is to provide recognition
for member facilities that have achieved exemplary results and demonstrated
commitment to their employees and their community during the previous
calendar year. The programs are also designed to promote continuous
improvement by member companies relative to their performance in
community awareness, emergency response, pollution prevention and
security.
The TCC Outreach Committee oversees the program. Committee members
as well as residents from local communities are involved in the
judging process.
Founded in 1953, the Texas Chemical Council is a statewide trade
association of chemical manufacturing facilities in Texas. Currently,
85 member companies produce vital products for our way of life,
fulfill educational and quality-of-life needs, and provide employment
and career opportunities for some 50,000 Texans at more than 200
separate facilities across the state.
BASF’s Freeport site employs about 600 employees and 300
contractors. Chemicals produced at the site are used in a wide range
of product applications including adhesives, superabsorbers, paints
and coatings, nylon and plastics.
