| BASF’s contributions
aid continued hurricane relief in Brazoria County
Funding provides support to displaced residents and existing community
programs
FREEPORT, Texas, January 11, 2006 -- BASF’s Freeport site
recently contributed $25,000 to local not-for-profit organizations
to aid continued hurricane relief and existing community programs.
The company contributed $5,000 to each of the following agencies:
American Red Cross; Brazos Cares Food Pantry; Habitat for Humanity
of Southern Brazoria County; The Food Basket; and The Salvation
Army.
As part of the Habitat for Humanity contribution, BASF will be
working with local volunteers to construct a “house in a
box.” This box includes housing components such as walls
and roof trusses that will be built and then disassembled for shipment
to a Texas community, which has been heavily impacted by Hurricane
Rita.
“Seldom does BASF have to be approached for contributions;
they seem to be aware of the needs and always react appropriately
and generously,” said Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh, Volunteer Executive
Director for Habitat for Humanity of Southern Brazoria County. “We’re
pleased that BASF has joined the Brazoswood High School Choir to
be one of the first to donate financially to the ‘house in
a box’ project.”
The $5,000 contributions to the American Red Cross and The Salvation
Army will assist both organizations in continuing to support displaced
residents still living in Brazoria County. The funds also help
these local chapter affiliates sustain existing community programs.
Food pantries – staffed solely by volunteers – provided
much-needed assistance to many individuals after the hurricanes.
BASF’s contributions will support the pantries in replenishing
food supplies and continuing existing programs.
"BASF is a proud member of this community, and most of our
employees live here,” said Art Colwell, Vice President and
General Manager of BASF’s Freeport site. “Many local
organizations and residents rallied together to help people displaced
by the hurricanes and that required significant time and resources.
We wanted to make sure these organizations had what they needed
to continue the great work they do in this community.”
Previously, BASF had contributed $25,000 to the Brazoria County
United Way to fund crisis response grants for Hurricane Katrina
relief efforts.
BASF’s Freeport site employs about 600 employees and 300
contractors. Chemicals produced at the site are used in a wide
range of product applications including adhesives, paints and coatings,
nylon and plastics.
