BASF gives United Way’s local hurricane relief efforts a $150,000 boost
Capital Area United Way to use funds for critical human services

GEISMAR, La., January 26, 2006 -- BASF Corporation recently presented the Capital Area United Way with a $150,000 contribution to help the agency provide critical services to thousands of residents still displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

“Our member agencies are seeing many problems resulting from the storms,” said Pete Stickney, Capital Area United Way Vice President. “We’re seeing many mental health issues among people who lost everything in the storms. We’re doing all we can to address the many needs that we see.”

Stickney said the hurricanes brought out the best in people who volunteered their time and contributed millions of dollars. In fact, the Capital Area United Way’s 2005 fundraising campaign reversed a four-year trend of declines in contributions.

“BASF and its Geismar site employees contributed $110,000 in 2005,” Stickney said. “The fact that BASF was willing to come through for us again with an additional $150,000 contribution is spectacular.”

Mike Cohen, Senior Vice President and General Manager of BASF’s Geismar site, said the company has enjoyed a long and rewarding relationship with the Capital Area United Way.

“BASF is contributing this money to help people get back on their feet,” said Cohen in making the check presentation. “We recognize the many needs that have arisen, and we know that the United Way will make excellent use of our contribution.”

The $150,000 United Way contribution was part of $1 million that BASF earlier pledged to hurricane relief efforts throughout the Gulf Coast region. A separate fund was established with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation for company and employee contributions. These funds have been used to assist displaced residents in the area.

The Capital Area United Way is a not-for-profit organization that raises money to provide support to its member agencies in the 10-parish Capital Area, which includes Ascension Parish.

BASF’s Geismar site manufactures a wide range of chemicals used in hundreds of consumer products.
