| BASF donates $25,000 to Boys & Girls
Club 'SMART Moves' program
Funds to be used in developing local prevention and education initiative
FREEPORT, Texas, February 24, 2006 -- BASF announced today that
it is contributing $25,000 to fund a new Boys & Girls Club
program called “SMART Moves.” The donation will be
given to the Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County in $5,000
increments over the next five years.
“We appreciate BASF’s contribution and the generation-changing
outcomes this contribution will help our members achieve,” said
Fay Beard, Chief Professional Officer of the Boys & Girls Club
of Brazoria County. “This SMART Moves partnership will allow
us to meet the needs of a greater number of young people in the
county and make a difference in the lives of our youth.”
The mission of the SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance
Training) prevention and education program is to promote responsible
behavior in young people ages six to 15. The program educates participants
by involving them in discussions and role-playing –as well
as resistance and refusal skills training - about responsible behavior
such as abstaining from drug and alcohol use. SMART Moves also
helps youths develop assertiveness and strengthen decision-making
skills, and be more cognizant of media and peer influence.
“BASF welcomes the opportunity to help grow this new program
and foster the positive growth of Brazoria County youth,” said
Art Colwell, Senior Vice President and General Manager of BASF’s
Freeport site. “We’re proud to help an organization
like the Boys & Girls Club that has influenced the lives of
so many young people.”
For 33 years, the Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County - a
United Way agency - has inspired and enabled young people to realize
their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
The organization serves more than 3,600 young people through nine
facility-based sites in Brazoria County.
Boys & Girls Clubs of America comprises a national network
of some 3,700 neighborhood-based facilities that annually serve
more than 4.4 million young people who are primarily from disadvantaged
circumstances. Known as “The Positive Place for Kids,” the
clubs provide guidance-oriented character development programs
for children that are conducted by full-time professional staff.
About 600 employees and 300 contractors are employed at BASF’s
Freeport site. Chemicals produced at the site are used in a wide
range of products including adhesives, paints and coatings, nylon
and plastics.
