BASF awards scholarships to two former Seneca Valley students
Students honored for academic excellence, community service
EVANS CITY, Pa., March 27, 2006 -- BASF has awarded $800 college
scholarships to Seneca Valley High School graduates Catherine Bishop and
Elizabeth Skubak in recognition of their academic excellence in science and
community service efforts. Bishop attends Westminster College in Wilmington,
Pa., and Skubak attends Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. Both are 2005
graduates of the high school.
"BASF has made substantial investments in this community that we greatly
appreciate,” said Mark Draskovich, Assistant Principal of Seneca Valley High
School. “The support BASF has provided to our students and our schools is
commendable.”
Last year, Bishop and Skubak received the highest grades in their Advanced
Placement Physics and Honors Chemistry classes. The two students were also
instrumental in organizing the Seneca Valley High School Blood Drives, which,
according to the Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh, had the most donations of
any high school in Western Pennsylvania.
Bishop is studying Early Childhood Education and Skubak is studying
mathematics. “I believe the education I received at Seneca Valley prepared me
well for college studies and BASF’s scholarship will help ease the financial
burden of this year’s tuition,” said Skubak.
“BASF has a strong commitment to enriching education and supporting the
communities in which we do business,” said Mark Finch, Site Services Manager at
BASF’s Evans City site. “In that spirit, we are proud to present these
scholarships to two very worthy students. We also applaud the Seneca Valley
School District for having a curriculum that is strong in science education and
promotes community service.”
BASF’s Evans City site employs approximately 120 people. Products from the
site are used mainly in the pharmaceutical industry, and are also used in
applications like agrochemicals, surfactants, adhesives, polymers, electronics,
flavors, fragrances and automobiles.
