BASF sponsors Earth Day events at EDCO Park
11th annual community celebration promotes environmental education

EVANS CITY, Pa., April 13, 2006 -- “Think Globally, Act Locally” will be the theme of the 11th Annual BASF Earth Day Celebration to be held Saturday, April 29, from noon to 4 p.m. (rain or shine) at EDCO Park. Sponsored by BASF and its Community Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER) Committee, the event is open to the public and free of charge.

BASF employees will be on hand to answer questions about the company’s Evans City operations and encourage public involvement in the CAER Committee. The celebration will include environmental education exhibits, demonstrations by local emergency service groups, door prizes and free refreshments.

"At BASF, we are not only committed to helping make products better, we are committed to helping make the communities in which we live and work better as well," said Uwe Liebelt, Vice President for BASF’s Inorganics Business in North America and General Manager of BASF’s Evans City site. " We hope our Earth Day activities will enhance the community's understanding of our operations and help make for a better environment."

A highlight of this year's event will again be the traditional display of posters created by fifth grade students from Evans City Middle School featuring the Earth Day theme. The winners, who will be announced at an assembly held at Evans City Middle School, will receive ribbons, U. S. Savings bonds and cash prizes. The overall winning design will also be featured on this year's official BASF Earth Day T-shirt, which will be distributed to all fifth grade students.

The Earth Day event attracted more than 750 people last year. Each year, employees from BASF join together a week before the event to beautify EDCO Park. Their efforts include mulching, planting flowers and general park maintenance. The day of the event, employees, along with Girl Scout troop #422, will also prepare tree seedlings for distribution.

Butler County Recycling & Waste Management Coordinator Sheryl Kelly has been an exhibitor at the BASF Earth Day event for five years. “This is a wonderful event for the community that highlights the many positive things happening in the area which preserve and enhance the environment,” Kelly said. “It’s a great source of information, and it’s a lot of fun for children and their families.” The Butler County Department of Recycling & Waste Management handles a wide variety of recycling, waste and environmentally related activities and plans.

BASF’s Evans City site employs approximately 120 people. Products from the site are used mainly in the pharmaceutical industry, and are also used in applications like agrochemicals, surfactants, adhesives, polymers, electronics, flavors, fragrances and automobiles.
