BASF partners with Brazosport College for ‘Operation Responsible
Care’
Area fifth graders go to college for a day to learn about chemical
manufacturing
FREEPORT, Texas, April 13, 2006 -- Approximately 1,000 fifth grade students
from Rasco Middle School and Angleton Middle School will experience what it's
like to work in a chemical manufacturing facility when BASF’s Freeport site
sponsors its “Operation Responsible Careâ event on April
26-27.
BASF began partnering with Brazosport College in 2005 to give local students
a “hands-on” learning experience about chemical manufacturing. The
students will begin their day at the college by taking a virtual tour of the
BASF facility that will provide them with a view of production areas and
laboratories and descriptions of end use products. After hearing a safety
message and receiving safety equipment, the students will proceed to the
college’s Process Equipment Trainer (PET) facility, where they will have a
chance to turn valves, check levels, and be introduced to various types of
processing and laboratory equipment.
BASF employees and Brazosport College instructors will conduct the
demonstrations and presentations, which will include a discussion about the
different career opportunities available in the chemical industry and the
educational resources at the college.
"Through the creativeness of our Responsible Care Outreach Steering
Committee and our partnership with Brazosport College, we have enhanced an
outstanding program and made it exceptional, said Joanne Weik, Outreach
Representative for BASF. “By taking the BASF program to the college we
have been able to facilitate a hands-on environment that is educational,
interesting, fun and safe.
"The teachers and students have told us that this format is much
friendlier and more fun than the bus tour of our facility which we hosted in
the past. Last year, one of the students wrote to say, 'Thanks for
everything. You taught me a lot. Now I can talk valves with my
dad.' Such a response makes the effort all worthwhile,” said Weik.
Responsible Care is an American Chemistry Council initiative designed to
promote the implementation of positive environmental, health, and safety
measures with an emphasis on community cooperation.
BASF’s Freeport site employs about 600 employees and 300 contractors.
Chemicals produced at the site are used in a wide range of product applications
including adhesives, paints and coatings, nylon and plastics.
Responsible Care is a registered service mark of the American Chemistry
Council.
