Emanuel represents BASF at Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute
Conference
FLORHAM PARK, N.J., November 15, 2006 – Dr. Calvin Emanuel, BASF
Intermediates Group in North America, served as a guest panelist at the
6th Annual Leadership Institute Recruitment Conference held by the
Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund in New York City. Speaking to a group
of engineering and science students, Dr. Emanuel shared his experiences working
in industry and provided highlights of his career at BASF.
“It was an exciting opportunity to meet with future scientists and
engineers,” said Dr. Emanuel. “They were eager to hear from people in industry,
learn how their college education prepares them for their future, and receive
guidance on pursuing a successful career in science and engineering. My advice
to them was to never stop learning and always be open to new opportunities,” he
added.
The annual career preparation conference is the largest of its kind for any
of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the United
States. It is a three-day event designed to help minority college
students prepare for entrance into the workforce by exposing them to a broad
cross section of public and private enterprises, as well as learn from
professionals representing a variety of disciplines.
The grandson of a slave, Thurgood Marshall argued before the United States
Supreme Court in 1954 and won the landmark case of Brown versus the Board of
Education of Topeka that demolished any legal basis for segregation in the
United States.
Prior to his nomination to the United States Supreme Court in 1967, he won
14 of the 19 cases that he argued before the Supreme Court – an achievement
unsurpassed by any other American. The first African American to be elevated to
the U.S. Supreme Court, Thurgood Marshall served from 1967 until he retired in
1991.
The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund (TMSF) was established in 1987 to
carry on Justice Marshall's legacy of equal access to higher education by
supporting exceptional merit scholars attending America's Historically Black
Colleges and Universities. The Office for the Advancement of Public Black
Colleges (OAPBC) created TMSF with Justice Marshall's support. OAPBC is an
information and advocacy unit of the National Association of State Universities
and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) in cooperation with the American Association
of State Colleges and Universities.
Today, 47 schools are members of the TMSF, including many of the nation's
largest and most prestigious institutions of higher education. To date, the
Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $50 million in
scholarships, capacity building and programmatic support. More than 5000
Thurgood Marshall Scholars have graduated and are making valuable contributions
to science, technology, government, human service, business, education, and to
various local communities thanks to the support they received from TMSF.
