BASF MetaMax® high reactivity metakaolin (HRM) is a white concrete additive that enhances the performance of cement-based products, including cement-based pool finishes, mortars, grouts, shotcrete and high-performance concrete exposed to severe conditions. Specifically, it is a highly reactive aluminosilicate pozzolan formed by calcining purified kaolinite at a specific temperature range.
All MetaMax products are engineered and manufactured in an ISO-9002 certified facility using advanced statistical process quality control (SPQC) to ensure optimal performance and conformance to ASTM C 618, Class N (natural) pozzolan specifications. Unlike other natural pozzolans, MetaMax high reactivity metakaolin is water processed to lighten its color, remove inert impurities and control particle size distribution. This carefully controlled refining process effectively yields an almost 100% reactive white powder that is consistent in appearance and performance from batch to batch. Because of its white color, MetaMax does not darken concrete as silica fume does, making it ideal for color matching and other architectural applications.
Beyond its unusual whiteness and color-matching ability, MetaMax high reactivity metakaolin also increases compressive strength, reduces chloride permeability and helps control alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) and efflorescence in architectural and other concrete applications using grey or white portland cement. Similarly, it goes beyond most other ultrafine pozzolans to provide excellent and improved dispersion, workability and finishability.
MetaMax can be used as a partial replacement for cement in many applications to improve overall performance and appearance. It also can be added to the cementitious content of an existing formulation to impart synergistic benefits as desired.
MetaMax PA is another grade of metakaolin offered by BASF. It is specially designed for use in cement-based in-ground swimming pools, where it improves finishing and converts calcium hydroxide into additional cement. By fortifying the weak link, MetaMax PA creates a longer lasting pool finish and easier finishing for the contractor.
The result is a pool plaster that is whiter, stronger, more durable and won't discolor as easily, providing better value for the builder and pool owner.
