Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)

How should foreign direct investment be constituted so that it contributes to sustainable development? This is an important question in the debate on globalization that BASF as an international company must answer for its foreign sites if they take the principles of sustainable development seriously.

International FDI-Conference in Shanghai, November 29, 2005

"Does Foreign Direct Investment lead to Sustainable Development?" was the title of a conference of BASF and GTZ (German Technical Cooperation) in Shanghai. One day before the United Nation Global Compact Summit in China the impact of foreign direct investment at a local level was discussed.

International Conference on Foreign Direct Investment, January 28, 2004, Berlin

On January 28, 2004, the international conference "Global responsibility of companies: Foreign direct investment as a motor for sustainable development?" took place at the Environmental Forum of the Auferstehungskirche in Berlin. This event was hosted by the BASF in cooperation with the embassy of the Federal Republic of Brazil, the organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Evangelische Akademie Loccum.

The Guaratinguetá-project

To discover what impact foreign direct investment has at a local level, BASF commissioned a study from Empresa Júnior of the Fundação Getúlio Vargas foundation in autumn 2002 on "BASF's investment at its Guaratinguetá site an analysis of the socio-economic and environmental effects on the community." On June 11 and 12, 2003, we organized a workshop in São Paulo with the goal of getting comments and suggestions from various experts and interest groups in the community.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI): Workshop

On June 26, 2003, BASF and econsense – the Forum for Sustainable Development – jointly hosted a workshop in Ludwigshafen on Foreign Direct Investment & Sustainability: Impact and Opportunities for Shaping the Future. How can companies contribute to sustainable development in a socially responsible manner? Taking a critical look at the results of the Guaratinguetá study was a central element of the workshop and the starting point for the debate on globalization and FDI.

Workshop "Site Development Worldwide" May 14, 2002

On May 14, 2002, BASF and econsense - the Forum for Sustainable Development of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) - jointly hosted a workshop in Ludwigshafen titled "Site Development Worldwide." The goal of the meeting was to discuss new models of site development for enterprises and to identify characteristics for sustainable foreign direct investment in less developed and newly industrializing countries.
