BASF’s "Design MDF" Finds an Enthusiastic Response in North America

Even before its debut at the International Woodworking Machinery & Furniture Supply Fair - USA®, BASF’s “Design MDF” is sparking considerable interest. The through-colored medium density fiberboard (MDF) technology is already very popular in Europe where it is used in the innovative design markets, including office furniture, molding, door skins, drawer fronts and store fixtures. Now, wood product manufacturers including displays, furniture and wood paneling as well as some craftspeople are showing strong interest in this new and innovative wood product.

“Design MDF provides many creative possibilities for furniture, cabinetry, displays, and exhibit and store fixtures,”says Wolfgang Adams, Business Manager for BASF’s Performance Chemicals business in North America.

The many features and advantages that Design MDF brings to the marketplace is causing the excitement. Typically composite wood panels, or fiberboard, are the characteristic straw color, and are usually unimpressive. Design MDF is a highly colored composite panel that creates an innovative look for composite wood products.

The most evident property of Design MDF is that the color is intense, and is consistent from one side through to the other. No longer does composite wood need to be covered up by decorative overlays and laminates. Nicks and scratches are not as noticeable with Design MDF and can easily be removed, which is not possible with conventional MDF.

How Does Design MDF Get its Color?

The development of new colors specifically for the needs of the wood-based materials industry became possible because of the integrated network of expertise on adhesives and colors within BASF. BASF is the world’s only manufacturer of both colors and adhesives. This made it possible to carry out the development and in-house testing of colors for wood-based materials. BASF’s own technical center tested the compatibility of colors with adhesives and additives used for manufacturing MDF.

BASF’s pigment preparations can be used to create Design MDF in black, blue, green, red, grey, brown, orange and yellow. Custom colors are also available.

The colors are added during production and bond with each individual wood fiber. No other mass colored MDF has the same properties as composite boards made with BASF materials. The final product has bright colors with good lightfastness.

Coated or varnished, Design MDF continues to look good even when subjected to heavy use; any signs of wear can be removed again and again with a light surface sanding.

Interest is expected to peak at the International Woodworking Machinery and Furniture Supply Fair-USA® in Atlanta, Ga. Here, woodworking and furniture supply professionals will be able to see furniture and other objects made from Design MDF.
