Introduction
BASF is the world's largest producer of propionic acid, with 176 million
pounds per year of dedicated capacity. From our production facility
in Ludwigshafen Germany, we are able to supply our customers reliably
and consistently throughout the world at all times. |
| Worldwide Applications |
|
|
Feed
Propionic acid is used as a mold inhibitor for animal feed,
wet corn, silage and grain. It is used directly or transformed
into ammonium propionate for this application. |
|
|
Food
Propionic acid is used in food preservation (mainly in baked
goods and cheeses). It is used to make calcium and sodium propionates,
which are added to food to prevent mold or "ropes"
in dry baked goods. |

|
Herbicides
Propionic acid is used as a raw material for plant protection
agents. It is an intermediate in the production of Diethylketone
as well as the optically active chloropropionic acid. |
 |
Other
Propionic acid is used as an intermediate in the production
of pharmaceuticals, plastics, plasticizers, textile and rubber
auxiliaries, dye intermediates, perfumery synthetics and flavorants
and cosmetics. |
