Within the framework of the pilot project, BASF analyzed the two products Neopor® and Fixapret® AP.

Neopor® is an innovative high-tech material for building insulation with an up to 20 percent better insulating performance than conventional EPS using the same amount of material. This means that less energy is consumed for heating and cooling purposes. The analysis of the Carbon Footprint of this product has shown that most of the greenhouse gas emissions occur during the use phase. Using Neopor® saves up to 40% greenhouse gas emissions as compared with the non-use of an insulation material. Only 5% of the total emissions are released during the production of Neopor®.

Fixapret® AP is a performance chemical which reduces time and effort in drying and ironing of bed linens and at the time increases their durability. In addition, the chemical reduces the so-called pilling-effect meaning the formation of small balls at the surface of the fabric, and thereby increasing its durability. Most of the greenhouse gas emissions linked to the use of regular bed linens come from the use phase and are caused by washing and ironing. Also during production, in particular while producing cotton, substantial emissions are released that cannot be neglected. The use of non-iron or easy-care bed linens helps consumer to reduce CO2-emissions.

For both products, comprehensive Eco-Efficiency-Analysis has been drawn up which also assess other environmental categories and further sustainability aspects.
