All-rounder TPU: BASF presents textile variety at Techtextil 2017

  • New application: Elastollan® as laminate films for printing on textiles
  • Breathable, permeable and tear-resistant: Elastollan as basis for fabrics, membranes, fibers and melt adhesives

BASF will present its competence with films, membranes, fabrics, fibers as well as melt adhesives – all based on Elastollan®, the company's thermoplastic polyurethane, from May 9-12, at the International Trade Fair for Technical Textiles and Nonwovens in Frankfurt. Due to its high elasticity and mechanical resilience, the plastic is suited for the production of various basic materials in the textile industry.

For the first time, BASF will demonstrate Elastollan used as laminate films for printed textiles. For this application especially, the material offers a broad range of advantages: Apart from very good material adhesion and wash- and abrasion resistance, it also has excellent printability even for complex contours. At the BASF booth, visitors of the trade fair can experience the material’s capabilities for this new application.

Elastollan is suitable not only for versatile breathable and water-vapor permeable membranes but also for particularly tear-resistant fabrics used, for example, in the construction industry: roof linings made from Elastollan show excellent durability as well as particularly high tear propagation strength. Moreover, they provide good adhesiveness and weldability under lathing and tiles.

In textile- and medical membranes, Elastollan offers high water-vapor permeability. When used as a component in textile membrane laminates, the material impresses with its wind- and water resistance.

Polyester fibers coated with Elastollan can be processed, among other things, into UV-resistant and highly flexible fabrics for shading systems as well as outdoor furniture.

TPU meets adhesives – BASF expands portfolio
By introducing two new products at the trade fair, BASF stresses its position as a provider of integrated solutions for TPU and TPU-based adhesives. Elastollan Bondura is a TPU for adhesives that contain solvents and extrusion coatings. It can be used as a base polymer for single component adhesives or in combination with cross-linking agents. Elastollan Hotbond is a TPU for melt adhesives. The melt flow index can be adapted depending on the precise type.

At the booth, further exhibits will be presented on the following topics: artificial leather for car seats, bags or furniture, nonwovens for example for filter, seal and hygiene applications.
