Low abrasion titanium dioxide batch for the white pigmentation of polyamide yarns

  • BASF Color Solutions Germany GmbH has developed a low abrasion masterbatch solution for polyamide yarns
  • A less abrasive anatase titanium dioxide type and an improved extrusion process enable a clear reduction of abrasiveness

Titanium dioxide pigmentation is required in many applications of polyamide yarns. The customary rutile and anatase white pigments used for this roughen the surfaces of the manufactured threads and fibers. As a result of this, abrasive wear increases, particularly in the manufacture of velour carpets or flock fibers. The consequences for the spinning machine and also for further processing are higher stress on the yarn-guiding elements and a faster wear of the cutting tools, which leads to high wear costs.

BASF Color Solutions Germany GmbH has studied this problem and developed a masterbatch solution for its customers.

On the one hand, a less abrasive anatase titanium dioxide type is used in the new white batches and, on the other hand, the extrusion process was specifically improved. Both steps were synchronized in such a way that the result was a clear reduction of abrasiveness.

Using the optimized masterbatch extends the service life of the tools and significantly lowers the wear costs of spinning and processing facilities.

BASF Color Solutions Germany GmbH offers these master batches under the name of Palamid® White in various concentrations ranging from 10% to 60% of titanium dioxide content.
