The Materials segment is composed of the Performance Materials division and the Monomers division. The segment’s portfolio comprises advanced materials and their precursors for new applications and systems. These include isocyanates and polyamides as well as inorganic basic products and specialties for the plastics and plastics processing industries. We want to focus primarily on organic growth through differentiation via specific technological expertise, industry know-how and customer proximity to maximize value in the isocyanate and polyamide value chains.

At BASF’s site in Geismar, Louisiana, the first phase of a new methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) synthesis unit is complete and in operation. Over time, BASF aims to double the capacity from 300,000 metric tons per year to approximately 600,000 metric tons per year. With this stepwise capacity addition, BASF will support the ongoing growth of its North American MDI customers. MDI is used in innovative polyurethane solutions that reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. Some examples include improved insulation for buildings and lightweight materials for the automotive industry.
