For more than 50 years, Palusol® panels provide improved fire protection in public and private buildings. Main applications are fire doors, bulkheads and security cabinets.
Palusol® fire-protection panels are classified as non-combustible building material. In case of fire, the silicate panel expands under the action of heat with generation of foaming pressure. The non-combustible, heat-insulating and pressure-resistant foam prevents fire and smoke from spreading to other rooms for a given period of time by filling joints and gaps. During this process, heat is reduced by evaporating water, thus producing an additional cooling effect. Palusol® is employed in fire-protection doors and glazing as well as in fireproof bulkheads for pipes, cables or ventilation elements.
Palusol® SW is a ready-made sandwich product composed of Palusol fire-protection panels and high-density fiberboards. The different combination and sequence of the individual layers create a torsion-resistant, flame retardant panel specially developed for the manufacture of fire doors and for use in fire walls.

Main Properties of Palusol® and Palusol® SW
Technical and Safety Information on Palusol® and Palusol® SW
Palusol®
Palusol fire protection panels for use in “intumescent products for fire proofing and fire retardant applications in case of fire” have a European Technical Assessment and carry the CE label. In addition, the quality is ensured by external monitoring by Underwriters Laboratories.
Palusol® SW
Palusol® SW products have been tested in accordance with the following standards and are listed with various testing and monitoring authorities:
- ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)
- UL (Underwriters Laboratories)
- NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)
- CAN/ULC (Standards Council of Canada)
- BS (British Standards)
Door manufacturers are provided with free licences of the listed door constructions. In the U.S./Canada, BASF continually conducts tests for the fire door industry based on derived timber products, especially for panel framed doors, of up to 90 minutes’ fire resistance. The detailed CAD drawings of the components are saved in the databases of the various testing institutes:

The HDF panels used are sourced from sustainably managed forests, and are labeled and certified with the FSC® logo.
Palusol is supplied from the factory with an epoxy resin coating on each side. Cut edges which arise during processing must be coated and adequately protected.
Palusol® fire-protection panels
- can be cut by means of conventional shears used for sheet meta
- can be nailed, sawn and drilled
- can be bonded using adhesives or glues which adhere well to epoxy resin
- Small parts can be produced using stamping tools
- When heated to above 60°C, the panels can be readily shaped and can be converted into the desired form by folding, rolling, etc
Palusol® SW
- can be worked using standard woodworking machinery (sawing, milling, drilling, etc.)
- can be adhesively bonded by means of commercial wood glues (white glues)
- Carbide tipped cutting tools are advantageous in order to obtain longer usage
- In the case of hot glue processes, it must be ensured that the Palusol layers between the HDFs are not heated to temperatures above 80°C
Sodium silicate dust is created during sawing or milling of Palusol®. It must not get into the eyes or respiratory passages and the use of appropriate extraction facilities and the wearing of safety glasses and a dust mask are therefore advisable. Central facilities as are used, for example, in the woodworking industry are satisfactory for Palusol and Palusol® SW. However, in the case of Palusol® SWR (wire mesh insert), separate extraction systems should be used since there is a risk of sparks being produced.
Palusol® and Palusol® SW should be protected from water, high atmospheric humidity and sustained temperatures above 40°C. Palusol SW is frost-resistant. The panels should always be stored lying horizontally and supported over their entire area. The wearing of protective gloves is required.
Applications of Palusol® and Palusol® SW
Palusol® is applied in the area of fire-protection. Fire doors and glazing as well as in fireproof bulkheads for pipes, cables or ventilation elements prevent fire and smoke from spreading to other rooms for a given period of time. There are also many more potential applications for Palusol fireboard panels, each resulting from efforts to develop functional constructions to prevent or restrict the spread of fire and smoke.
Self-closing barriers designed to prevent the penetration of fire and smoke through openings in walls for a given period of time can be successfully fitted with strips or sections of Palusol®. These are arranged in wooden or steel doors, gateways, and flaps in such a way that, in the event of a fire, they reliably seal off joints and gaps in minimum time. Depending on the construction of the building component, a fire-resistance time of up to 120 minutes is possible.
Examples
- Wooden or steel single-leaf or multi-leaf doors, with or without glazing
- Sliding doors, rolling gates
- Multifunctional doors (Fire, Smoke, Sound insulating doors)
- Elevator doors, Doors on ships
- Fire curtains
- Inspection flaps/ Wall flaps

Here, again, Palusol® offers consistent protection against fire and prevents the loss of valuable commodities such as money, documents, computer diskettes, etc. stored in safes. When used in cabinets for storing solvents Palusol also ensures safety and prevents the spread of fire of readily ignitable or explosive substances.

Palusol® is also used in fire protection walls to prevent fire from spreading throughout a building by forming fire zones. Similarly, separating walls can also prevent flames and heat spreading in railroad vehicles.
