Singapore is not only Asia’s Smart City No. 1, but also rates, after Copenhagen, as a showcase city when it comes to the networking of sustainability, everyday life, the working environment and infrastructure. By 2022, the city state wants to be a “smart nation” – a goal that is to be achieved not least with the aid of the Internet of Things that harmonizes data collection and control for all aspects of everyday living. So it is hardly surprising that new buildings are already committed to these aspirations: A 280-meter-tall high-rise, designed jointly by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA), is aligned with these intelligent goals. Due to be built at 88 Market Street in the Central Business District, it will be one of Singapore’s tallest tower blocks, uniting urban living with tropical vegetation. On 93,000 m², residential and retail space will mesh with office solutions that the designers have dubbed “offices of the future”. The technology integrated in the 51-floor building, comprising sensors, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, is intended to make life as comfortable as possible for the residents and users of the high-rise building. In addition to a focus on demand-driven, responsive architecture, the design also embraces nature and the upgrade of an existing structure: BIG and CRA are transforming a former multi-story parking garage dating back to the Eighties. Instrumental in this is a special façade with trees seemingly breaking through its open elements. Behind it, both on the first floor as well as on the middle level and roof, are green oases serving residents and users as places of rest, recreation and togetherness. The skyscraper is due for completion in 2021.
