Preserving our earth and environment has become an important driver for today’s society. While industrial operations are continuously working to reduce their impact, more and more customers are making environmentally conscious purchasing decisions when it comes to products offered. BASF’s polyisobutene (PIB) is an essential building block and enabler in a broad and diverse range of customer industries and their manufactured end products. Following the tradition of being the innovator of PIB and the clearly spelled out aspiration that comes with the product's promise ‘made to innovate’, BASF, as the first company in the market and by applying BASF’s Biomass Balance (BMB) approach, has successfully made this essential component available derived from 100% renewable feedstock – providing a true alternative to fossil-based feedstock and contributing to the reduction of impact on our precious planet.
CO2 reduction targets are driving energy and fuel efficiency. Lubricants are recognized as potential contributors for improved energy efficiency. Polyalkylene glycols (PAGs) are known for outstanding properties like low friction coefficients, cleanliness, antiwear properties and long drain intervals. Additionally, PAGs offer high viscosity indices, typically above 200, which can provide improved fuel economy and energy efficiency as well as more robust oil films for better wear protection. However, PAGs show no or only limited compatibility with mineral oils and PAOs. To fill the gap between compatibility and performance, BASF developed a novel technology with unique polyether-based hybrid structure. Parts of the molecular structure contribute to outstanding frictional behavior, exceeding PAO performance, while other parts help to achieve compatibility with hydrocarbon oils. The new technology can be used in various industrial and automotive applications, including gear oils, axle fluids, compressor lubricants and greases.
In the 21st century the target to reduce emissions, and thus improve fuel economy, represents a major driver for automotive manufacturers. Smaller, lighter and hotter engines are being developed. New construction materials are being used in the manufacture of the engine cooling system. Other drivers are legislative requirements (e.g., REACH) regarding the components used in the final product. As a result, problems are observed in modern engine coolant systems, e.g., deposits, reduced functionality of the heat exchanger and increased corrosion. This requires new breakthrough technologies when it comes to future engine coolant solutions. GLYSANTIN® G64® not only exceeds all technical requirements and fulfills the demanding legislative requirements but also sets a new benchmark for the sustainable protection of modern engines.
KEROPUR® gasoline performance packages protect the intake system of engines by forming a fluid protective film and thus preventing the formation of deposits (keep clean effect). The cleaner engine system results in better performance, improved combustion, a longer engine life and therefore also in a reduction of overall costs.

Our joint eco-efficiency analysis for hydraulic fluids proves how important our holistic view on the entire value chain is. With the results of such a well-founded study, we also want to provide impulses for the entire lubricant industry
One of the opportunities to operationalize the concept of sustainability is to participate in the product EU Ecolabelling scheme. BASF Fuel and Lubricants Solutions strongly supports the initiative, by having a substantial number of products (base fluids and lubricant oil additives) assessed for the EU Ecolabel for the lubricant product group, and included in the Lubricant Substance Classification (LuSC list). The assessment of eco-friendly lubricants involves detailed analysis of the product chemical composition, (potential) hazard and exposure scenario’s, its technical performance and use of verified sustainable raw materials. In this capacity it is an advantage that the company has extensive technical, regulatory and toxicology expertise, benefits from own research and testing capacity following the principles of Good Laboratory Practice and several production locations that are RSPO-certified.
Under the advocacy umbrella, Dr. Ivana Krkljuš supported the Revision of the existing EU Ecolabel criteria (Commission Decision 2011/381/EU) for lubricant product group. The new EU Ecolabel criteria are established in several tripartite meetings between the EU Ecolabelling board and their supporting institutes (e.g. JRC-Sevilla, ECHA), NGOs, and lubricant industry stakeholders. The success may be attributed to the investment of significant resources by BASF into the initiative in terms of time and providing advice around the review of four technical reports, and final representation in front of the European Commission’s Directorate General for the Environment (Brussels, 2018).
