The main production site of BASF is by the Rhine River, in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Ludwigshafen is the company's largest production site, global headquarters, and the center of its research activities.
BASF’s long tradition in the aroma industry dates back to the early 80’s when it started running its own Citral production plant in Ludwigshafen. Early 2000 the construction of a world-scale Lysmeral® production plant started.
In 2004, responding to the increasing customer demands for terpenes, BASF created a larger Citral complex with downstream (i.e. Citronellol, Linalool and Geraniol) in Ludwigshafen. And in 2012 BASF opened the world’s largest menthol production plant in Ludwigshafen. Being a well-recognized partner for the F&F industry, BASF is constantly working to strength its global footprint and increase its contribution to the aroma ingredients market. At our new Aroma Ingredients Complex in Kuantan, Malaysia, the production of Citral and Citronellol has been started up successfully and is running stably. Furthermore, the start-up of the Menthol plant has been completed and we produced first amounts of in-spec Menthol. It is our highest priority to further optimize our production processes and to steadily increase our production output.
