Sustainability

"We drive sustainable solutions." This is one of BASF's four strategic principles. Nanotechnology is indispensable for this purpose.

It enables us to develop resource-conserving products, ensure healthy food and nutrition and improve people's quality of life. In doing so, we strike a balance between economic success, social responsibility and environmental protection.

Example environmental protection and economy: Only by using nanotechnology can we save large amounts of energy and thus also costs in many different sectors. At the same time, nanotechnology reduces carbon emissions.

Slentite™

Nanopores provide the specific material characteristics in one of BASF’s new high-performance insulation material. Slentite™ is the first high-performance insulation panel based on polyurethane, which needs only half the space compared to traditional materials while offering the same insulation performance. Up to 90% of the volume of the organic aerogel consists of air-filled pores which have a diameter of only 50 to 100 nanometers. As a result, the air molecules’ freedom of movement is limited and the transfer of heat is reduced. The high-performance insulation material can be used, for example, in the construction sector for old and new buildings.

Master X-Seed®

With the concrete additive Master X-Seed®, nanotechnology is also contributing to greater sustainability in the construction industry. With Master X-Seed®, precast concrete units no longer have to be heated to 50-60 degrees Celsius to make them harden within a certain time. During the manufacture of precast concrete components Master X-Seed® therefore reduces the consumption of energy and resources as well as carbon emissions and thus also saves costs.
