The BASF site in Ludwigshafen receives a DGNB gold certificate in the Sustainable Construction category for its new laboratory building. The building was designed and built under the auspices of BASF constructional engineering. The DGNB criteria were followed meticulously from the start.
By achieving a 72.5% fulfillment level, BASF and its new building qualified for this second-highest award.
A decisive factor was the ecological quality. The evaluation commission pointed out that the building is not only low in emissions, but its outstanding life cycle assessment is also most impressive. Thanks to partial aspects such as “low-emission construction materials” and “low resource consumption”, the building even qualified for platinum status.
Other DGNB evaluation criteria include efficiency, social and functional quality as well as process quality, site and engineering were also key elements in the evaluation. In order to achieve the defined sustainability goals, the entire construction and design process was supported by a consultant specialized in DGNB certifications.
“It is important for us to show that BASF also places tremendous importance on sustainability when it comes to the construction of buildings. When designing laboratory buildings, our particular focus is on the partial aspect of energy efficiency. This enables us to achieve significant energy savings during operations of our laboratory buildings,” says Bernd Junker, Project Manager at BASF.
The ventilations system is one of the most important facilities in a laboratory with the purpose of protecting employees when handling hazardous substances. However, it is also one of the biggest energy consumers in the building. Therefore, a highly-efficient heat recovery system was installed in the new laboratory at the Ludwigshafen site. The laboratory fume hoods are operated with variable air volumes, which ensure maximum occupational safety at the highest possible energy efficiency.
Working comfort was also a great concern for the construction planners. “Research thrives on communication as a source of new ideas and developments,” explains Bernd Junker. “The floor layout with its central laboratories, which are surrounded by analysis zones and laboratory appendices, has the advantage that hazardous substances don’t have to be transported through office space. Glass partitions provide visibility and facilitate the exchange among researchers.”
The flexible use along the entire life cycle was assessed to be a positive factor during the certification. The design of the technical building services enables adapting the building continuously and easily to the changing demands of the users. “The award documents that our new laboratory has an excellent life cycle assessment and can be used sustainably,” Junker summarizes.
Presentation of the certificate is scheduled during a ceremony at the BAU trade fair in January 2017.
