BASF and Kunshan Huguang expand cooperation to co-create innovation in automotive applications

  • Partnership to develop new materials for the production and assemblies of automotive automotive wiring harness by using polyurethane
  • Low emission, odor and sound absorbing polyurethane materials meet market demand in China’s automotive industry

Kunshan, China – November 23, 2020 – BASF and leading automotive parts manufacturer Kunshan Huguang Auto Harness Co., Ltd. (Kunshan Huguang) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop high and low voltage wiring harness and low emission polyurethane (PU) system product applications.

“There is a growing demand in China’s manufacturing sector to increase production efficiency and enhance operational excellence. With BASF’s expertise in advanced materials and PU technology, we are able to help Kunshan Huguang simplify production process and increase efficiency by providing custom made PU systems with lower emissions and odor,” said Desmond Long, Vice President, Business Management Transportation, Performance Materials Asia Pacific, BASF.

Under the MoU, BASF will provide material and technical expertise in the development of innovative product applications by Kunshan Huguang.

“We have had great success with BASF in developing the PU automotive wiring harness. Compared with the previous process, BASF’s PU systems enabled the labor cost saving, thanks to its outstanding sound absorbtion, water resistance properties and adjustable hardness to ensure three-dimensional cable harness shaping.  We will further strengthen the cooperation in this field to co-create innovations in automotive applications,” said Mr. Sanrong Cheng, Chairman, Kunshan Huguang.

As a leading producer of automotive wiring harness, Kunshan Huguang has been partnering with BASF since 2019 on the development of polyurethane materials for the automotive industry. As part of the MoU, the two parties will also jointly promote the use of polyurethane systems to meet the needs of automakers.
