BASF has been operating in Malaysia for more than 25 years through a number of wholly-owned companies and joint ventures in the country.

While BASF has only been operating in Malaysia for about a quarter century, BASF products have been available in the country long before the company established its physical presence. Over the years however, the increasing demand for its products saw BASF gradually venturing into production in Malaysia. Initially, the company was involved in the production of textile auxiliaries and printing inks through a joint-venture. Then as the growing importance of Malaysia to the BASF Group become more and more visible, the establishment of a permanent physical presence in the country became a viable option.

The rapid industrialization experienced by Malaysia in the 1970s and 1980s coupled with the existence of a stable economic, political and social environment created a conducive climate for investment. Thus in 1989, BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd was incorporated as a wholly owned subsidiary of BASF SE. The inception of the company was soon followed by the setting up of several manufacturing facilities in the country. Today, BASF has 6 leading production & operation sites, a joint-venture business with PETRONAS, and a regional shared service centre in the country.
