Pushing back the boundaries of plastics
The plastics industry requires plastic additives to achieve the desired properties and performance of their products in specific applications. BASF’s comprehensive and innovative product portfolio includes stabilizers which provide ease in processing, heat and light resistance to a variety of polymers and applications including molded articles, films, fibers, sheets and extruded profiles.
BASF light stabilizers prevent degradation and give plastics the required resistance to light, temperature fluctuations and weathering. They are used in the production of protective helmets, providing long-lasting protection against strong UV radiation, extending the life of the polymer compound.
Plastic compounds used in safety gear must be strong and durable enough to meet strict regulations. Exposure to sunlight and some artificial lights can have adverse effects on the life of plastic products. Ultraviolet light can initiate chemical reactions in polymers which result in discoloration and the breakdown of chemical bonds and loss of physical properties. BASF’s range of light stabilizers include UV absorbers that act by shielding the polymer from ultraviolet light, and Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS) that act by removing the radical intermediates formed in the photo-oxidation process.
The specialty plastic for high-quality parts
BASF offers materials especially designed for applications that require high heat resistance ‒ they always retain stiffness and dimensional stability even when used at extremely high temperatures. Their wide spectrum of properties allows them to be molded into high-quality engineering parts and highly stressed mass-produced articles. This specialty plastic offers high long-term service temperature, excellent transparency, high stiffness, good dimensional stability, and mechanical strength even at high temperatures. This is very favorable in case of exposure to fire. It also offers excellent hydrolysis resistance and favorable dielectric properties.
