Chemistry enables more clean water

Water is an essential building block of life.

We are 80% made of water. Our planet is 70% covered with water. However, it is increasingly becoming a scarce good as the world’s population and demand for water continue to grow.

There is enough freshwater on the planet for seven billion people, but it is distributed unevenly and too much of it is wasted, polluted, and unsustainably managed. Many of these water-based challenges can be addressed with appropriate water treatment solutions. With chemistry, polluted water can be cleaned.

Sustainable Use of Water

The sustainable use of water and worldwide conservation of natural water resources are therefore of concern to us. We are committed to responsible water use along the entire value chain and at the watershed level. We are contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals for water and acknowledge the human right to water and sanitation.

Sustainable use of water is an integral part of BASF's corporate purpose: “We create chemistry for a sustainable future.” We set a global long-term goal for the future—by 2030, we want to establish sustainable water management at all sites in areas of water stress and at our Verbund sites.

Our commitment to worldwide partnerships in this field enables us to improve our knowledge and share our expertise with others. Since 2010, we participate in the water reporting by the CDP. We signed the Pledge for Access to Safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene at the Workplace (WASH) to commit to implementing access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene in the workplace at an appropriate standard for all employees in all premises.
