Shampoo, Badeanzug und Pflanzenschutzmittel haben eines gemeinsam: Ihre Ausgangsstoffe werden aus RohÃ¶l hergestellt. Doch die Ã lressourcen sind endlich. Deshalb suchen Forscher bei BASF schon heute nach Verfahren, um wichtige Grundsubstanzen auf anderem Wege herzustellen. Besonders vielversprechend sind hierbei Zeolithe. By using these artificially produced catalysts, scientists can, for example, use methanol to make olefins, which are important for the chemical industry. The platelets of BASFâ s COE-2 zeolite shown in the image are 5 to 15 micrometers long and less than 100 nanometers thick. The silica frameworks have tiny pores into which small molecules like methanol can fit. But it takes many years before a zeolite is actually used for such a reaction. Zeolite catalyst for chemical processes

BASF researchers are looking for new oil-independent processes for manufacturing important raw materials. Zeolite catalysts are particularly promising to produce olefins from methanol.

Digitalkameras, Akku-Bohrschrauber oder Hybridautos: Ã¼berall dort, wo Strom nicht aus der Steckdose kommt, werden diese nano- bis mikrometer- groÃ en Metalloxidpartikel als sicherer Energiespeicher fÃ¼r Batterien und Akkus im Einsatz sein. Bei den abgebildeten Partikeln handelt es sich um sogenannte Einschlussverbindungen. Die Lithium-Ionen sind im Kristallgitter eines Metalloxids eingeschlossen, wÃ¤hrend die Elektronen im gesamten Partikel verteilt sind.

Organic aerogel for high performance insulation

Slentite^® is the first mechanically stable polyurethane aerogel for insulation panels. Due to its nanoporous morphology, it has low thermal conductivity, allowing for even thinner insulation panels. This helps reduce energy costs.

However it is only able to produce these biocatalysts in small quantities. The microorganism was genetically modified to enable it to manufacture large quantities of phytase and other enzymes as a kind of living factory.

A fungus as a living factory

The genetically modified filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger produces enzymes for animal nutrition on an industrial scale through fermentation. This makes the feed more easily digestible and the nutrients more available for the animals.
