Due to the weather, however, these energy sources are subject to fluctuations. If it is clouded or when there is no wind, only very little energy can be generated. In contrast to this, on sunny or windy days, more energy can be generated than is needed.

Therefore, we need solutions at this point, which ensure constant and reliable power supply to compensate these fluctuations.

High energy

A single NAS battery container features 1.2MWh energy. By adding up containers, the total energy of the system can be easily scaled up to multiple MWhs. Therefore, NAS batteries are the #1 choice for high energy applications. field-proven reliability.

Discharge duration 4-8 hours

With its capability to discharge for 4 - 8 hours, NAS battery is best suited for long duration applications such as time shift or peak shaving, but also for grid upgrade deferral.

Long life time

15 years /4500 cycles. Thanks to its slow degradation, NAS battery maintains its functionality for up to 15 years or 4,500 cycles (whatever comes first)

Enhanced safety

Safety is of a paramount importance. Each cell, each module and each container undergo a thorough examination and a number of severe tests before being dispatched. NAS battery is a truly environmentally benign technology 

There are no "critical" raw materials used in NAS batteries. Na, S, Alu-ceramic, sand, steel - all materials are abundant on earth and can be easily reused or recycled.

About NAS batteries

NAS battery consists of sodium as the positive electrode and sulfur as the negative one. A beta-alumina ceramic tube functions as electrolyte, which allows only sodium ions to pass through. When discharging, sodium is oxidized and sulfur is reduced to form polysufide (Na2Sx). The charging step recovers again elementary sodium and sulfur. The battery runs at temperatures of around 300°C. Both elements are in liquid state when the battery is operational. The cells are packed into a module, whereby 6 modules are mounted in one battery container. 

We supply containerized NAS battery systems with 200KW/1.200MWh. Additionally we provide 24/7 technical support and a performance guarantee for 10 years. 

The compact form enables easy transportation and quick installation at our customers' sites.  

Containers have been tested for self-extinguishing capabilities and mechanical stability. Depending on your energy storage need, one or more containers can be installed. Typical layout of NAS battery system.

FOR MICROGRIDS AND REMOTE ISLANDS:

  • You can minimize usage of your fossil fuel or biomass generators by combining it with a NAS battery, thus both reducing CO2 emission and optimizing your energy costs.
  • 24/7 Power supply: on sunny days, solar power excesses an average load by 4 to 5 times. Battery needs to discharge for 14 – 18 hours to shift the surplus solar energy to nighttime and early mornings. NAS batteries can discharge for up to 18 hours when discharging at lower output and thus meet 24/7 power supply requirements 
  • NAS batteries in a microgrid configuration with islanding (self-sustaining) capability used in combination with solar or other local power generation can provide additional resilience.

FOR ENERGY CONSUMERS (BEHIND THE METER)

  • Peak shaving: energy costs can be reduced by reducing high peak energy sourced from the grid. The battery is charged when the energy demand is lower than is fed by the grid. During high peak demand times, the battery is discharged and delivers the difference between the demand and the electricity sourced from the grid.
  • Time of use shift: end users with local power generation (mainly PV) can reduce or eliminate their grid power usage by storing excess solar power and shifting its usage from daytime to nighttime and thus optimize their energy costs
  • Backup power and resilience: continuous power supply for six hours or more in the event of grid outages

FOR VIRTUAL POWER PLANTS

  • Demand response: supply-demand balance can be maintained by aggregation off-peak demand power not used by consumers and utilizing it for external needs.

FOR ENERGY SUPPLIERS

  • Renewable generation enhancement: stable and reliable power supply is ensured since fluctuations caused by renewable energy such as wind and solar are leveled out by NAS battery which absorbs excess energy during peak times of energy generation and provides additional power during demand peaks.

FOR ENERGY TRANSMISSION AND DISTRUIBUTION COMPANIES

  • Investment deferral: transmission and distribution upgrades can be deferred or even eliminated. Power is imported into a transmission constrained area when loads are light, charging NAS batteries that are positioned nearby. During peak load time, NAS batteries are discharged to supplement the power from the transmission lines.
