We have made it our goal to reduce the worldwide High Severity Injury rate per two hundred thousand working hours to 0.05 at most by 2030.

Beginning in 2018, we adapted our reporting on accidents to the recommendations of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) and the German Chemicals Industry Association (VCI). To implement these recommendations, we also had to convert our targets. In 2023, we have adjusted our targets and are now focusing on Work Process-Related High-Severity Injuries. These continue to be based on established industry standards, with a stronger focus on people.

In 2023, 0.03 High Severity Injuries per 200,000 working hours¹ occurred at BASF sites worldwide. Despite our efforts, there was one fatal work-related injury in 2023 (2022: 1), in which two people lost their lives. Two contractors suffered fatal injuries in a car accident on a business trip in Brazil. 

At the Gunsan site in South Korea, an employee of a contractor succumbed to injuries sustained from falling after receiving an electric shock during painting work on a high-voltage transmission tower.

BASF supported the relevant authorities in their investigation into the circumstances and cause of the accident. We use the findings to take appropriate measures to prevent this from happening again. Such measures include regular information and awareness campaigns.
