“Be innovative – think sustainable” was the motto for the final of the 12th international competition of R-M®, BASF's automotive refinish paint brand. In Clermont de l'Oise, near Paris, 15 young painters from all over the world demonstrated their spraygun expertise. This year, in addition to the ability to work efficiently and meticulously, the participants were judged on the sustainable aspects of their work. Therefore, the environmentally friendly use of resources was also on the agenda.
Myles Veljacic, who came third in the overall evaluation after Berry Kooijman from the Netherlands and Genya Yokota from Japan, was distinguished as the most sustainable painter. “I am really happy about this award,” said the 28 year-old Canadian. “I think it is very good to raise the awareness on the efficient and sustainable use of products in our refinishing process. The competition has once again opened my eyes to this important issue.”
“Actually, we see a strong demand and requirement from bodyshops to increase efficiency and also to improve the ecological footprint,” said Katja Scharpwinkel, Senior Vice President, Automotive Refinish Coatings Solutions Europe. “And this is where we try to help with trainings, services and eco-efficient products.” Paints with excellent hiding power enable bodyshops to save 20 to 30 percent of material. Another example is the new LIGHT FILLER GREY. Under a UV curing lamp, it dries in virtually no time at all and can be further processed without any cooling time. It can be directly applied to metal without primer. This saves both time and energy and also requires less material.
In order to reflect R-M's holistic approach to sustainability, the Best Painter Contest final was organized in a climate-neutral manner – from catering to transport. To offset the CO2 emissions from the visitors’ and participants’ flights, R-M supports a water project in Kenya. The project provides filters for purifying water, which eliminates the need to boil the water and in turn, burn large amounts of wood.
