As part of our dialog we regularly contact and meet with government departments, members of parliament, NGOs and other stakeholders in many of the countries where we do business.

European Green Deal

The European Green Deal is the EU Commission’s response to environmental-related challenges we are facing globally. By creating chemistry for a sustainable future, our innovations are contributing to the European Union’s ambitions.
Steam cracker II, the largest individual plant at BASF's Ludwigshafen site, covers a surface area of about 64,000 square meters, which is about the size of 13 soccer fields. The steam cracker is also the heart of BASF's Verbund production strategy. This giant plant has been operating since 1981 and uses steam to crack naphtha at about 850°C [1,562°F]. This process leads primarily to ethylene and propylene, both indispensable feedstocks for manufacturing numerous products in Ludwigshafen.


Climate change is a societal challenge. Innovative solutions developed by BASF contribute to protecting our climate, and we also work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our value chain. Energy efficiency plays a key role in this context.
The modern control station in an intermediate products plant at the Ludwigshafen site is where all information relating to the plant comes together. Using numer-ous screens, the plant operators control and monitor the highly complex chemical processes. On the “Collaboration Board,” a large touchscreen in the center of the room, the employees call up all the im-portant information at the same time and can thus work in an effective and concentrated manner. Dominic Hauß, chemical technician trainee, discusses a plant flow chart with his colleagues at the “Collaboration Board.” The plant for intermediate products is made up of 16 plant sections and manufactures a broad portfolio of around 50 intermediate products such as amines or diols. BASF customers need these products for applications including the production of coatings for the automotive industry, pharma or crop protection products.


Digitalization presents big opportunities for us. Using digital technologies and data, we are creating additional value for our customers and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of our processes.
Der BASF-Supercomputer, QURIOSITY, ist im Betrieb. Mit einer Rechenleistung von 1,75 Petaflops (1 Petaflop entspricht einer Billiarde Rechenoperationen pro Sekunde) bietet QURIOSITY eine etwa zehnmal höhere Rechenleistung als bisher für wissenschaftliches Rechnen zur Verfügung stand. Dies ermöglicht der chemisch-industriellen Forschung, in kürzester Zeit, Antworten auf komplexe Fragen zu finden und bisher unbekannte Beziehungen zwischen Forschungsgegenständen herzustellen.
