Research

BASF is one of the leading companies in the field of chemical nanotechnology. Its research activities also include nanostructured materials and nanoparticles.

The successes achieved by BASF research are clearly reflected by the end products with their convincing quality and sustainability. In the field of organic electronics, for example, research is ongoing into future-oriented products such as highly energy-efficient organic light-emitting diodes. The use of nanoproducts in medicine is another research topic aimed, for example, at combating hazardous biofilms in the hospital environment.

Microencapsulation

One BASF research field in which nanotechnology plays a key role focuses on the development of formulations of active components, especially on microencapsulation. Active substances are thereby enclosed with a wax, polymer or oil-based protective shell. This enables the actives to be used more specifically for the application concerned and function more effectively. Researchers at BASF have succeeded in designing the shell according to the application need, making it only a few nanometers thick or nanostructured. This allows control of the time and speed at which the active substances can be released at the desired target location.

Metal organic frameworks

Metallic organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly crystalline structures with nanometer-sized pores and exceptional high surface areas. BASF is a global leader in both MOF research and large scale MOF production. In 2012, BASF received the renowned Pierre Potier Prize for research of MOF synthesis based on a waterborne chemistry in ton scale quantity. The award pays tribute to chemical innovations that support sustainable development. Areas of application could be, for example, energy, environment and catalysis.
