Neopor® Plus

Upgrade of a tried-and-tested "classic“ for efficient external wall insulation

For many years, Neopor® has been a tried-and-tested product for efficient thermal insulation on buildings. BASF has now upgraded this "classic" and in 2010 launched Neopor® Plus for the production of efficient external wall insulation systems in Europe, followed by the recent market launch of Neopor® Plus GPS in North America.

This enhanced high-performance insulation combines the many proven features of Neopor® with new performance attributes. For example, Neopor® Plus GPS achieves the same insulation performance as other rigid foam insulation with about 30 percent less material. The innovative product also incorporates a novel polymeric flame retardant.

Graphite particles with reflective properties

Silver-gray Neopor® Plus GPS is comprised of many small pockets of air within a polymer matrix containing graphite. The graphite reflects radiant heat energy like a mirror, preventing the unwanted flow of heat between the building interior and the outside world. The material adapts to a wide range of climate zones and also improves the indoor climate at the same time. Unlike most other polymer-based foams that block the exchange of heat better with increasing outdoor temperature, Neopor® Plus GPS powers up its thermal resistance as the outdoor temperature falls. What's more, the insulation is adaptable in thickness, size, shape and density. Thanks to these product characteristics, the novel high-performance insulation has a huge diversity of applications, featuring maximum efficiency, cost-effectiveness and sustainability. "Neopor® Plus demonstrates our commitment to introducing eco-efficient and sustainable thermal insulation products to the North American construction sector," declares Giorgio Greening, Senior Vice President of the BASF Business Unit for Styrenic Foams.

 

 

The insulating material offers a huge range of applications: Neopor® facilitates energy-saving design and efficient insulation.    

Awarded GREENGUARD GOLD certification in North America, the insulation has already been used in a variety of projects in the USA, scoring highly on all counts. Building contractor Tim O’Brien Homes, which builds 250 private homes per year, chooses the BASF HP+ Wall System that, along with other components, includes Neopor® Plus GPS rigid foam insulation. "Customers have realized greater energy and cost efficiencies," says a delighted Luis Espada, Business Manager Neopor® Insulation North America. These positive effects are confirmed by Ben and Kathy Higl, who have given their house exterior insulation of Neopor® Plus GPS: "Our home used to be drafty in winter, and in the summer we had some rooms that were too warm to enjoy. We have already noticed a difference in the comfort level of our home."
