Physics means teamwork
Conduct research with us in interdisciplinary teams.
As a physicist at BASF you will work on projects which inspire every researcher. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team composed of chemists, materials scientists and other natural scientists, working for example on organic light emitting diodes, nano-particles, catalysts, pigments or construction chemicals.
Your expertise is in demand: as a specialist in a certain method or working area you will contribute significantly to driving our research projects forward. We invite you to become excited about our broad know-how of scientific investigative methods.
In addition, the framework conditions at BASF are excellent: the interdisciplinary, global collaboration opens up fascinating areas of work and a large investment in innovation projects, together with numerous cooperative partnerships with leading universities and industrial partners also create new opportunities.
There are different ways to join the research divisions at BASF for a physics graduate with a PhD: either with a classical direct entry as a laboratory team leader in research or for a limited time as a post-doctoral researcher.
Alternatively you can also join BASF in selected areas via a trainee program. You can find more information on our careers portal under "Start In".
Please apply to one of our job postings or send us your unsolicited application – we are already looking forward to meeting you!
With a PhD in physics you have specialist knowledge in one or several measurement methods (for example spectroscopic, microscopic, diffractive, mechanical or rheological), in molecular modeling, scientific computing or materials research with a focus on polymers.
You are open to everything that's new and enjoy scientific and technical questions, which you solve creatively and with goal-orientation. You enjoy working in an interdisciplinary environment and understand how to lead a team to achieve the best results.
You can communicate self-confidently and convincingly in English and you see business travel as an opportunity to further develop your intercultural skills.
You will start as a laboratory manager in research. Here you can expect exciting challenges such as in scientific computing, molecular modeling or in analytics.
You will work in one of our three global research areas.
In Advanced Materials & Systems Research we create solutions with new functional materials and systems for the automotive, construction, electronics, detergent and cleaning agents, water and wind industries.
In Process Research & Chemical Engineering we develop new and improve existing processes for the manufacture of base chemicals, intermediates and fine chemicals. We are also seeking alternatives to the raw material of crude oil and we are working on energy conversion and storage.
In Bioscience Research we seek new ways of increasing agricultural productivity and meeting the need for healthy food using biotechnological methods as well as research in new crop protection products, making sure our solutions meet the highest standards in human and environmental safety.
As laboratory manager you will work in interdisciplinary teams, undertaking tasks related to the research of catalysts, performance products, polymers, biophysics or organic electronics.
Together with your laboratory team you will plan and carry out experiments.
You will establish structure-property relationships, further develop investigation processes, and assume responsibility for the project management of your research and for filing patents. You will work closely together with other research groups within the global BASF research community as well as with colleagues from (technical) marketing. Depending on the project you might also collaborate with external research institutes.
In process simulation and optimization you will work closely with process engineering, systems engineering and production.
We offer attractive framework conditions and excellent development opportunities.
In addition to the role of laboratory manager there are many other development opportunities for physicists, for example within applications testing, quality management, product safety, environmental protection, patents or knowledge management, technology and innovation scouting and in human resources.
A scientific career as a specialist is of course also possible.
By starting in research you will become familiar with many of these possible future positions.
You will discuss your next career steps with your supervisor. To support you in your plans we continuing education and training measures are available to support you in your plans.
