Soluplus – for effective drug delivery
- BASF’s new polymeric solubilizer makes drug substances more soluble and improves bioavailability
- Soluplus helps pharmaceutical companies offer innovative drugs in tablet formulations
Ludwigshafen, Germany – October 13, 2009 – BASF is to present its newly developed solubilizer Soluplus® for the first time at CPhI in Madrid (October 13 – 15, 2009, Hall 3, Stand 3F24). This innovative excipient forms solid solutions with poorly soluble drug substances. As a result, the bioavailability of such drugs improves. BASF’s Soluplus helps customers in the pharmaceutical industry develop and produce innovative drug products containing active substances of poor solubility and bioavailability that could not have been formulated with conventional excipients.
Soluplus was developed specially for pharmaceuticals produced by hot melt extrusion. The technology is becoming increasingly important in drug development and production because it is ideal for formulating novel drug substances, which are in many cases barely soluble and not sufficiently absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. With hot melt extrusion, the individual ingredients of a medicine are not simply compressed into a tablet. Instead, a polymer like Soluplus is added to the ingredients and the combination is mixed and melted at high temperatures in an extruder. The process yields what are called solid solutions, enabling poorly soluble drugs with otherwise limited bioavailability to be administered in tablet form.
With its polymer chemistry expertise and clear commitment to developing new pharmaceutical excipients, BASF contributes significantly to its customers’ success. A global team of experts strives continuously to develop and improve the portfolio of active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients.
