Creator Space™ Tour stop in Ludwigshafen

Following stops in Mumbai, Shanghai, New York, São Paulo and Barcelona, the Creator Space™ tour concluded in Ludwigshafen, Germany at the end of November.

The participants addressed one key question in particular throughout various activities: How can we ensure future energy supply?

By 2050, global energy demand is forecast to rise by more than 50%. In order to secure our energy supply in the future, new solutions will have to be developed. Germany, in particular, is in the midst of an energy transition: Electricity generation is becoming increasingly decentralized. As a result, electricity grids and energy markets will have to change and become more flexible. Therefore, BASF chose to make “smart energy” the theme of the tour stop in Germany.

“Industrial and energy companies, politicians, scientists and interested public will have to work together if we are to find efficient solutions for the energy supply of tomorrow. At the Creator Space Ludwigshafen, we want to discuss technologies, storage systems and business models for intelligent energy supply with our partners,” said Margret Suckale, member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE.

Experts, students, scientists and employees as well as representatives from politics, business and society were invited to Ludwigshafen to co-create solutions together with BASF.

The program comprised various events including a 24 hour Designathon, where young people focused on new applications for smart energy solutions in public spaces. At the end of the event, they presented their concepts to a jury of experts.

Over the course of two days, 70 experts debated on renewable energies, decentralized technologies and the social requirements for their implementations during the Summit, the tour stop's centerpiece. In six workshops they developed ideas and presented them in a final presentation.

On the second day of the Summit, the winners of the international innovation contest on energy storage were announced. Four research teams from Sweden and the US were each rewarded with prize money of EUR 100,000 for their innovative battery concepts.

At the end of the tour, the ten best employee teams of the Urban Living Idea Contest competed against each other in a so-called idea pitch. Two teams were able to convince the jury. One winning project came from Shanghai. Their idea: a detergent, that helps reduce the water and cleaning agent consumption during washing. The second winning project presents the idea of a passive process in which humidity can be extracted from the air. Both ideas will now be granted the financial support and resources in order for them to be carried out and implemented as innovative projects in the future.
