World Food Day 2015 – food is life

October 2015

October 16 is World Food Day Established by the United Nations to mark the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), this annual event is meant to draw attention to agricultural food production, heighten public awareness about hunger and an opportunity to point to achievements made in food and agricultural developments.

The United Nations has declared its determination to end hunger and to achieve food security as a matter of priority and to end all forms of malnutrition in their 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As the global population rises and our food demands increase, challenges become more and more complex.

How can we – as an industry – improve the situation in the coming years to prepare for a world population of 9 billion in 2050? And how can we provide people with healthy and nutritious foods that meet their demands?

The production and supply of sufficient, high quality and safe food is a key global challenge and BASF is clearly committed to create solutions in joint partnerships.

With its expertise in crop protection for agricultural production, products and solutions from its business division Nutrition & Health as well as many more solutions for example in the area of sustainable packaging to further prevent food losses and waste, BASF's solutions address the complex challenges ahead.

Agricultural Production

BASF defines sustainable agriculture as achieving more yield from existing land, using less water and energy, while ensuring the profitability of farming, caring for the environment and meeting the needs of society and future generations.

For more than 100 years, BASF has delivered continuous innovation to farming in partnership with farmers to produce more and better food more efficiently.

The Farm Network, a BASF partnership, shows how modern agriculture can go hand-in-hand with measures to support the environment, local wildlife and plant species. Read the blog on the cooperation between BASF and The Farm Network.

By using sensors, data and IT farmers can increase their yields while using less resources and safeguarding the environment. BASF’s agronomics experts use data sets coming directly from the field to generate automated recommendations the farmers can use in real-time.

In Peru BASF and the food and beverage company PepsiCo work hand in hand with potato farmers to support a sustainable production of potatoes for high quality potato crisps. Find out more about the project here.

Ensuring healthy and nutritious food

Science gives insights into the right mix of foods that can keep us healthy. Through its product solutions, technical assistance, scientific capacities and partnerships with academic and public-interest organizations, BASF engages in programs in over 30 developing countries to help alleviating vitamin A malnutrition.

Creator Space™ tour in Barcelona

The consumption of food and drinks causes between 20 and 30 percent of the environmental impact that is generated in Europe. Given these figures, it is essential to promote responsible food consumption with the involvement of all the stakeholders in the value chain, from the farmer to the end customer.

End of October Barcelona will become a platform for multidisciplinary exchange that brings together more than 500 specialists in different areas. Customers, suppliers, employees, scientists, creative professionals, students, representatives of the government administrations, NGOs and several citizens groups will all take part, working jointly together to design innovative proposals, from both a business and social perspective, that respond to three specific challenges:

  • Solutions to help citizens adopt a healthy and sustainable diet.
  • Solutions to increase the efficiency of the water resources of the Spanish agricultural sector.
  • Solutions to reduce food waste and to optimize waste management in Barcelona.
