Worldwide, water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource. The sustainable use of water and worldwide conservation of natural water resources are therefore of concern to us. We are committed to responsible water use along the entire value chain and at the watershed level. We are contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals for water and acknowledge the human right to water and sanitation.
BASF uses water in the manufacture of products, for cooling and cleaning, and as a means of transportation. We reduce emissions to water from our production processes and we are continuously optimizing the reuse of water through recirculation. BASF has embraced the goals of the Responsible Care Initiative, applies them to the entire BASF Group, ensures their implementation and monitors their performance.
To promote water stewardship and to increase BASF's resilience to water stress, we pursue the goal of establishing sustainable water management at all sites in water stress areas and at our Verbund sites by 2030 by applying the European Water Stewardship (EWS) standard. Around one fifth of our sites are located in such areas. The EWS Standard provides our sites with a framework to understand their water use and impacts, and to work collaboratively with other water users within a catchment context.
